'Talk About Essex' was an innovative strand of Essex-themed literature/cross art packages. Events took place around Essex during 2006 involving well known personalities and big audience attractions with a county connection.
The first event in February 2006 brought together four famous and always entertaining commentators: Germaine Greer, author of
The Female Eunuch; Simon Heffer, Essex resident and associate editor of The Daily Telegraph; Martin Newell, musician, broadcaster, poet and Wivenhoe resident; and Ken Worpole, Essex author and resident for many years, to discuss 'What is it about Essex?'.
To try and answer this question, the commentators and Essex residents came together at the Essex Book Festival with Insite, examining stereotypes and the misconceptions that people have of the county because of its image. The standard of the speakers was considered 'excellent' by 76% of the public and 37.5% affirmed to have a better perception of the county after the event.
'The Essex I love is the Essex of the enormous sky where the water systems come rushing from all points of the compass. It is not picturesque, it is beautiful' - Germaine Greer
Other events part of the 'Talk About Essex' project were the 'Essex Food Challenge' in September 2006 and the 'Food in Landscape' exhibition by James Fletcher during 2007. More details of these two elements can be found in the
'Essex Food Challenge' project section.
